I am Abdullah Khan, a Mumbai-based novelist, screenwriter, literary critic, and banker.
My debut novel, "Patna Blues," has garnered international attention and is being translated into 20 languages, with 11 of these translations already published. It has also been optioned for a cinematic adaptation by a renowned production house. My writings have been featured in esteemed publications such as "Wasafiri" (London), "Brooklyn Rail" (New York), "The Hindu," "Outlook," "Frontline," "Mint," "Scroll," and more. My second novel, "A Man from Motihari," was published by Penguin Random House in March 2023. I have also co-written the third season of TVF’s "Yeh Meri Family."
In 2017, "Viraam," for which I wrote the story, screenplay, dialogue, and a bhajan (lyrics), was released in theatres.
I can write in Urdu, Hindi, and English, and I have a working knowledge of Bhojpuri and Punjabi. I am widely read and have lived in villages and small towns, giving me first-hand knowledge of the Indian hinterlands. I enjoy writing in drama, thriller, mystery, action, and rom-com genres, as well as stories set in small towns. I also have good understanding of Hindu mythology , so I am capable of working on shows based on Hindu scriptures.
